Gender Justice Cell
ABOUT : The Gender Justice Cell(“GJC”) at NLIU endeavours to promote gender equality and raise concerns against acts of injustice and discrimination perpetuated on grounds of sex. It addresses the causes and consequences of gender inequality, both nationally and locally. The GJC, in the past, has been very vocal on issues related to LGBT rights, human trafficking and sexism in the media. The cell vouches for an egalitarian society where members of all sexes are treated fairly and equally.
ACHIEVEMENTS : Through it Facebook Page, the GJC has taken major steps to bring people together and break gender-related stereotypes. It is a portal where free minds come together and discuss relevant issues. The members of the social media(even people beyond the NLIU community) have benefitted from the articles, debates and news items shared on the page and have a clearer understanding of sensitive issues.
Some of the pressing issues raised by the GJC are :
· Muslim women and Triple Talaq
· Sexist bikini round in Miss World Competition
· Sexual Abuse against Men
· Chivalry and Feminism
· Homosexuality and Indian Television
· Rakshabandhan
· Tax on tampons in the UK
· Time limit on abortion
Under the auspices of the GJC, students have been provided with opportunities to conduct empirical researches in and around Bhopal to assess the situation and condition of LGBT community where they not only met members of the community but also psychologists and lawyers in order to get a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted topic.
FUTURE PLANS AND INITIATIVES : The GJC plans to start with an online blog so that the exchange of ideas flourishes further. Subject to the funds available, the best articles shall be published in a fortnightly newsletter. The cell wishes to start a Free Legal Aid service where legal advice could be given to women who are not aware of the rights guaranteed to them by the law.
